Expansion – My One Word for 2020 – Part I

December 30, 2019 1 Comment

I don’t have a “one word” every year but on the years that I do they seem to just show up. I don’t go through some exercise to think one up. They could be seeds planted by the Holy Spirit or they could be my imagination. What I do know is when they do show up they tend to stick around.

Expansion – “The act or process of expanding.”Dictionary.com

My past words have been Generous, Focus and Effective. Expansion seems to be different from my words in years past. Most often my one word provides some overarching goal or vision for the year. However, I really don’t know what Expansion means for me personally; at least not yet. I don’t have a clear understanding on how it will impact or guide me in 2020. I know you may be thinking, “Then why did you pick it?” That is just it, it seemed to pick me and it has been rolling round in my thoughts for a couple weeks now.

I always want to be careful when trying to make the Bible fit a topic but here are a couple verses that seem to speak to the theme / topic of expansion. I am confident that expansion is a Biblical principal we see in a variety of areas.

Expansion in the Bible

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitation be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.” – Isaiah 54:2

“And God blessed them. And God said to the, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” –  Genesis 1:28

If you read through the first few chapters of Genesis, you see that the earth was a pretty chaotic place. The garden was a place of God’s perfect will amidst the chaos and Adam and Eve were to expand the garden to cover the earth. – Just like our call to spread the good news of Jesus

Let love find its place in the expansion of God’s glory and reign over the entire earth and all its peoples. – Ed Stetzer

My initial thoughts for me personally are to expand either into new areas or expand in the areas I am already involved in. I don’t think it means to just do more things and hopefully not the expansion of my waistline. It most likely means to expand my reach as a disciple of Jesus.

As many of you know I am a bi-vocational Pastor. This means I work a full-time job in addition to leading with my wife as we co-pastor Life Church in Conyers Georgia.  Spare time is not something I have a lot of.  However, I have been planning for several months now to expand my social media ministry. I think I may be crazy to go down this road since I struggle to blog on a regular basis. However, I have a deep passion to help encourage, motivate, mentor and coach others. I want to help others find a deeper passion for Jesus and help them learn how to live out their calling in everyday life.

Expansion Coming soon for 2020

In order to expand I will need to be a better steward of my time. My roles as a husband, father, grandfather and pastor will always be major priorities in my life. I would appreciate your prayers as I head down this path of 2020

Let me know in the comments if you have a one word for 2020. If not, let me know your one or two big rock goals for the year.
