Our Eternal Hope in Jesus
Just a few weeks ago I had the honor to preside over a celebration of life for a very dear friend. These times always draws our attention to eternity. The main text I used for my homily was 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 (CSB). Our life here on this earth really is a vapor that passes quickly. If we have found faith in Jesus, we do have a great eternal hope
In this video I do a quick deep dive look at the eternal hope we have in Jesus found in 2 Corinthians 5:1-9 (CSB)
Paul really packs a lot in just a few sentences
Our Earthly Tent
- In this earthly body we groan
- Longing to be fully connected / clothed by God
- Because of the ongoing battle between our spirit and sin
- Our earthly body is subject to decay / suffering of this life
- Even the unbeliever groans
Our Heavenly Tent
Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly wait for a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body, by the power that enables him to subject everything to himself. – Philippians 3:20-21 (CSB)
- At the return of Jesus we will be resurrected and we too will get a new body. We will be glorified.
- No pain, no sickness, no stress or anxiety
What about now?
Paul is not saying we should rush of to die so we can be with Jesus. We should live our lives not for ourselves but to bring God glory
As I already mentioned life on this earth truly is a vapor. (James 4:13-14 CSB) When compared to eternity our time on earth is not even a blink of the eye.
- Treasure each day – be grateful no matter what comes our way.
- Each day is a day to serve others and share the good news of Jesus Christ with others.
- This eternal hope is found only in Jesus. There is no other way
- Leave a legacy — My Great-grandfather lived during the mid 1800s and he was a pastor. He would ride horseback through Georgia as an itinerant preacher. I can only imagine the influence his faith had on my Grandmother who influenced my dad’s faith who influenced mine. Now some 120 years after the death of my Great-grandfather, I am living out my own calling as a pastor.
- The life you live each day can have an impact good or bad on future generations
- Let’s make each day count
We have a great eternal hope in Jesus Christ that should cause us to live each day for God’s glory. True happiness, peace and joy in this life is found when we live for the benefit of others.
Let me know in the comments your thoughts on this great eternal hope
