Advent of Christ – Week 1

“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.” – Malachi 4:5-6 (NIV)

We continue our second week of Advent remembering that God promised Christ would come the first time and take time to focus on his promised second coming.

John the Baptist was the Elijah that came to prepare the way for the first coming. John called the people to repent and return God so that they would be ready for Jesus’ arrival.

John reoriented the focus of the people. He called them to look to God. I believe that like the first coming the second coming will also require an Elijah to rise up to prepare the way. It will not just be a single person but it will be the church. Currently the church is broken and fractured. It has lost its influence. As members of God’s church we need to take time to repent and  refocus our own lives. Only when truly live as living sacrifices for Jesus (Romans 12:1-2) will the church rise up again calling the nations to repentance preparing the way for our Savior, our King Jesus Christ.

The day and time are not important. Even Jesus said that he did not know the time (Matthew 24:36). Our job is to simply be prepared, watching and waiting for his return. And as we watch we should work to spread the gospel to expand the Kingdom of God.

Come Lord Jesus, Come Quickly

Will you work to lead the church to be that voice? Will you prepare the way for the return of our King?
