To Know God Better
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. – Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)
I have written before on the Prayers’ of Paul. The bulk of his letters are him praying for the churches. His prayers are never long but they are powerful and complete. They also focus on a higher level that is greater than just praying for our basic needs.
Recently Ephesians 1:17 has captured my attention. There is so much Paul could have prayed for the Ephesian church. He could have prayed for their health and safety but he prayed for something greater. He prays that they would have a better knowledge of God.
Dictionary.com lists one of its definitions of know as: “to understand from experience…” What better thing could we pray for than to experience a better knowledge of God our Father?
The Christian faith is an active faith. We use the term born again when someone accepts Jesus as their savior. Like a natural infant we are not meant to stay babies in the faith; however, we are to always be growing in our faith in and relationship with God. – To know him better.
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. – 1 Peter 2:2-3 (NIV)
Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God – Hebrews 6:1 (NIV)
Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation
Learning most always requires some form of study and lessons; however, to know God requires something more. To really know God requires that wisdom and revelation be given to us by the Holy Spirit. Sure we need to be dedicated and disciplined students of God’s Word the Bible but it is God himself through the Holy Spirit that we come to truly know him. Many have read and studied the Bible without ever knowing the author. Only when we pray and submit to the Spirit of God do we gain the wisdom and revelation to know him better.
Like Paul my prayer for you is that our glorious Father may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. In Jesus name Amen.
