Do Nothing But…

October 10, 2016 0 Comments

Too often we seem to just drift through life letting each moment come and go as it will. Before we know it ten thousand moments have flown by and we are no different (or perhaps worse off). God did not create us to drift through life. But with his leading we live proactive and intentional.  The Bible is pretty clear that God does not do random. He is very intentional with his creation and his will. He created us in his image.

“We do not drift into spiritual life; we do not drift into disciplined prayer. We will not grow in prayer unless we plan to pray. That means we must self-consciously set aside time to do nothing but pray.” – D.A. Carson

Dr. Carson’s quote is specifically about prayer but it applies to all areas of life. We accomplish nothing of any lasting value unless we set aside the time and put forth the effort to make it happen.

Focus

I have written on this before but multi-tasking is a lie. We really can’t do it.  We only quickly move back and forth from one task to the other.  The true power in getting things done is when we set aside the time to focus on one thing. We harness the power of no so we can focus on the right yes. Instead of doing a lot of little things we do a few things great! Focus has been my keyword for this year

Embrace the Moment

It is so easy to get caught up in our dreams for the future that we wind up spending our days focused on “One day.” Life is fleeting and only God knows if tomorrow will even come for us.  Embrace each moment and squeeze every ounce of life out of it. Each moment embrace the goodness and faithfulness of God. Each moment do the work for the dreams and visions God has birthed in your life. Each moment enjoy your family and friends. At the end of your life let nothing be left on the table.

Proactive and Intentional

We must embrace each moment but we also must keep an eye on the future. It could be a future that just happens or we can with the leading of the Holy Spirit chart a course. The blogosphere is flooded with posts on creating your own personal vision and mission and just as many on goal setting. Yet very few people set any kind of goals for the future. Very few even read a single book a year. Then they wonder why each year looks the same. My walk of faith, and my personal growth should both be moving forward. If they aren’t, I have no one to blame but myself.

In less than three months 2016 will be nothing but history. Will you finish the year well? Don’t drift out 2016 but take the time to do nothing but grab life and make it yours. Make it yours for you, for your family and most of all for the Glory of God.
