With a little bit of neglect life can become a trap of the mundane and a failure to live out our full potential. In the book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High the authors put forth the claim that breakthroughs are more often than not really “break-withs.” They are breaks with old habits, agendas, visions etc.
Life can be hard and that burden can weigh us down to the place where our only vision and hope is just making it through one more day. Trying to keep our lives the same everyday becomes the easy way out. Life seems to move from one crisis to the next.
The only way to overcome this is to break-with what we have embraced as normal.
- Prayer – it always starts here. Don’t pray just to escape your current circumstances but pray to make sure you are aligned with your personal God given calling. (Tweet This)
- Let go of your past – Celebrate and learn from your past but don’t fall into the trap to let yesterday define today. (Tweet This)
- Be a perpetual learner – Learn a new skill and / or learn to overcome a weakness that has become a hindrance
“Constantly develop your expertise. In the past year, everything has changed: your clients, the market, technology, society. Your expertise must keep pace with the changing landscape.” – Joe Calloway
- Embrace risk and take a step of faith. – To break-with you have to push beyond where you are now. Risk may lead to failure but great leaders know how to move beyond their failure. You will find yourself moving forward more than backwards. Nothing great has ever been accomplished without risk. (Tweet This)

Your voice is important; I would love to hear from you.
So what will you “break-with” to breakthrough?
