Praying for Your Calling

April 20, 2015 2 Comments

It seems to be a deep part of us to live a life of meaning, a life of purpose. At times our calling seems to be an elusive treasure that requires great effort to discover. I know for much of my life I searched and hunted for it myself. It was a constant prayer that I would hear God’s will and have the strength and wisdom to persevere when I could not see clearly.

Matt Fireman Helmet 2

This past Friday night I had the privilege to watch my son Matt take the oath as he became a Spalding County GA Firefighter. As just a little kid he wanted to be fireman. Then through high school he wanted to join the Air Force but when the day came he never would sign up. Instead he started training to be fireman at a local technical school. He applied multiple times with several departments; however, the call never came. Matt was discouraged but he pressed on. I am also sure he prayed. I know his mom and I did.  He applied and interviewed with Spalding several months ago only to find out he was an alternate. Then two weeks into their training class, Matt got the call to report. It was a grueling ten weeks. Supposedly Spalding has one of the toughest Rookie School’s in the state. It is great to watch Matt walk into his calling for this part of his life.

Matt For a fireman their calling really is greater than their life. When others run from a burning building firemen run to it. I am so thankful that Spalding County still knows the importance of prayer. They prayed three different times during the Friday night graduation. One day during Matt’s training the guys gathered around and prayed for him. I am so thankful that Matt’s leaders understand that it is God who gives us and fulfills our calling. Prayer is our submission to his leading (at least it should be).

Let me close with a prayer that all the Firemen read together:

 A Firefighter’s Prayer

When I am called to duty, God,

Wherever flames may rage,

Give me strength to save some life,

Whatever may be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late,

Or serve an older person from the horror of that

fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

and quickly and efficiently put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

to guard my every neighbor and protect his

property.

And if according to your plan I am to lose my life,

Please bless with your protecting hands my children

And my wife.
