The Mission Field of Daily Life
The church must take up the mantle of being sent by God to bring a lost and hurting world to Jesus. We are sent to wherever we happen to find ourselves at this moment. – As we are going we make disciples
“And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” – Matthew 18:18-20
As You are Going…
It is easy to read the scripture above from Matthew (The Great Commission) and define it as meaning that we are to go to foreign lands and that only specific people are to go. Yes we are to go to all lands and preach the gospel but we must see “going” as something greater. We need to see the going in our everyday. The Greek translation of the word “go” actually means, “as you are going” make disciples.
Everywhere We Go, We are The Church
I want to learn to see the mission field of our daily life. Some are called to full time ministry but most are called to live out a life for Jesus in the normal everyday. I believe that these people are actually the more important. It is great to gather in church each week to fellowship and worship as a community. However, when the service ends and we leave the building, church does not come to an end. Everywhere we go we are the church. As I go about my life I am the church to whomever I meet. I could very well be the only church they will experience. When I go to a local restaurant, my neighborhood, the store, work, or even the local park I am the church. That restaurant, neighborhood, store and park are our mission field.
As you go, show the love of Christ. As you go, pray for those you meet. As you go, share the gospel.
You may be shy, you may be bold it really does not matter. Jesus will still use you in some way as you go. I often remind my congregation I am one of the biggest introverts they will ever meet. I often get nervous in striking up conversations with strangers. Here is a simple thing you can do. Tell your neighbors or co-workers that each week you take time to pray for them. Ask, “Is there anything specific I can pray for you this week?” Write their request down. Listen to that small still voice then ask if you can pray for them right then. This small act can build up your courage and it often gently opens the door for you to be a witness. We may not all be called to be an evangelist but be open to to the simple ways you can start making disciples as you go. – Learn to see the mission field of daily life.
